Search engines are programs that match the words used to pages on the web.
Describe what you need in as few terms as possible.
Choose descriptive words.
Googling Limiters:
" " Quotation marks will search for the exact word or phrase inside the quotation marks.
"OR" Search results will include either word.
- The minus sign works to exclude results with a particular word of phrase.
~ The tilde sign searches for a word and all its synonyms.
... Three periods search for a numerical range. Ex. 1950...1960 will show results between those numbers.
* Using an asterisk will search a word stem. Ex. enviro* will get environment, environmental, environmentalist
define: Typing define: before a search will give a definition to a word or phrase.
site: Typing site: searches only particular websites. Ex. [Medicare site:gov] searches government sites only.
link: Typing link: before a search will give webpages that link to a particular website. Ex. [link:www.clarkstate.edu] brings up sites that link to Clark State's Web page.
